U.S. Senator John Cornyn commented  on his weekly call with Texas reporters about the importance of a free press:

“I’ve always believed in the importance of a free press because if you look at the places where the press is most criticized and is most pilloried, it is authoritarian regimes or places where there’s a lot of criminal activity where they don’t want the exposure.”

“I would say that there is also, I believe, a very important concomitant responsibility on the part of the press to make sure that they get it right, and I understand the pressures of time and money that are very different today than they were even back when I studied journalism. And I think professional journalists are doing important work to protect our freedom.”
