Longview ISD hosts a Junior and District Science Fair each year. The Junior Science Fair is for 1st- 4th grade students and the District Science Fair is for 5th- 12th grade students. Since the 1st- 4th grade students cannot advance to the Regional science fair, each elementary campus holds their own science fair. The judges choose the top ten projects from each grade level to advance to the Junior Science Fair. Students have an opportunity to talk to judges about their projects and receive awards. This year the students also did hands-on labs (Cat’s Meow, Ooze, Ice Cream, and Elephant Toothpaste) and had their face painted.

The students in 5th – 12th grade students have an opportunity to participate in the East Texas Regional Science Fair at Kilgore College if they win at the District Science Fair. For the past two years we have had over eight students to advance from the Regional Fair to the ExxonMobil Science Fair in San Antonio, Texas.

“I feel we must continue to promote students’ scientific enthusiasm and inquiry. I believe the science fair provides students learning opportunities that challenge them to use what they have learned to solve complex problems,” stated Shalona McCray, coordinator for the LISD Science Fair. “Our school district wants every student to have an opportunity to participate in the science fair and campuses purchased backboards for every child who needed one. It is an honor to work with supportive teachers, faculty, PTO, and community who have played a vital part in the science fair over the years. I love seeing our students excited about science.”
