The Longview Gregg County Unit of the NAACP will host its “Pulling Together: The Time is Now” Freedom Fund Gala on Saturday, July 27, at 5:30 p.m. at the Faith Center at First United Methodist Church in downtown Longview.

To culminate a year of community service and social justice activism, unit officers and members, as well as special guests, will “… pause to celebrate the many unit accomplishments as well as pay tribute to local individuals who are committed to improving the social, educational and economic conditions of underserved and under-represented citizens,” according to Branden Johnson, president of the equality-seeking organization. The gala will highlight the entertainment of The Hall Brothers. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the local unit’s youth programs.

The local NAACP organization year-round works closely within the surrounding units in the East Texas community to offer programs “… that improve the quality of life for men, women and children of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds,” the president explained.

The day-to-day operations span a wide spectrum of services, just a few of which include listening to clients with legal or education concerns, providing citizen awareness forums, and promoting youth engagement and empowerment activities.

“Much of what we do is lesser known by selfless volunteers and strong community partnerships,” Johnson cited. “However, funding the continued support of the unit and these crucial programs comes at a cost. Some of the costs are defrayed by the generous donations of our sponsors who believe in our mission and unite with us to ensure it is carried out.”

Purchasing tickets to the black-tie gala is a show of support for the organization and its programs that are “purposefully making a difference in our community,” the president said.

Tickets are $30 each. People interested in becoming members may do so at the event or online at Just be sure to use Unit #6197.

“Those who purchase tickets and who participate in our Freedom Fund Gala will be helping to raise funds necessary to do remarkable work on behalf of our local residents,” Johnson said.
