Professional Athletes against Childhood Obesity will be teaming with the Spring Hill Independent School District’s Panther Health and Wellness Program for the district’s 5K For Healthy Life Walk/Run as a benefit for the school district.  All are invited to attend at the Spring Hill Panther Sports Complex at 3101 Spring Hill Road, Saturday, March 31 as the school district and professional athletes’ organization give a kick-jump for a healthy spring.
Registration will commence at 7:00 a.m. with the Spring Hill and White Oak Student Fun Run kicking off an hour later. The 5K Walk/Run will start at 9:00a.m.  All 5K runners will be awarded a t-shirt and goodie bag and Chronotrack disposable timing tags will be used.  The first three males and first three females to finish the event’s separate age categories will receive awards.  Each must have his/her timing tag on their shoe to be eligible.
Vendor booths will distribute health-related material while such corporate sponsors as the U.S. Marine Corps, Play 60, Blue Bell, Blue Cross/Blue Shield and others will provide their own information.  Professional athletes will also attend.
The school district and professional athletes have implemented this event as part of the “Run and be Active” program for children aged kindergarten through 5th grade.  Program Chair Kay Doss is excited over the project’s potential.
“We are seeing great results,” she said. “The students are thriving with this program.  They are not only showing an improvement in their overall health, but also demonstrating improved academic performance and positive behavior.”
Professional Athletes Against Childhood Obesity (also known as PA2CO) is a non-profit group founded by former National Football League player David Mims.  As its name indicates, it strives to decrease obesity among America’s youth.  The organization stresses proper nutrition, physical fitness and any other factor that leads to healthy weight and a longer life.  By organizing such runs as this and health fairs PA2CO hopes to assist communities, schools, churches, hospitals and families avoid obesity in their children.  All are invited to participate in this mission of bringing good health to those who need it most–America’s youth.
