Fund provides financial assistance to nursing students enrolled at Longview facility
The University of Texas at Tyler recently announced the new Laura B. Jackson Endowed Nursing Scholarship, which will provide financial assistance to nursing students who are taking classes at the UT Tyler Longview facility.
“These new scholarships enhance our ability to train quality nurses at our Longview campus,” said Dr. Michael Tidwell, UT Tyler President. “Like so many others who have contributed to help students in Longview and Gregg County, we appreciate the Jackson and Darby families for their generosity.”
Laura Blanche Jackson died of cancer at age 29 in 1992. Prior to her death, she requested that some type of recognition be made to nurses. Laura’s cousin, Leah Killingsworth Darby, fulfilled her wish, and in 1993 a charitable trust was created by the Darby Family with Leah, husband John, son Miles and daughter Beth as Trustees.
“On behalf of the Laura B. Jackson Trust we’re delighted to be a part of the endowed scholarship program at UT Tyler,” said Miles Darby. “The Laura B. Jackson Trust has provided awards and scholarships to deserving nurses and nursing students for more than 24 years. The UT Tyler nursing program is another wonderful outlet for the trust’s purposes. On behalf of the Jackson and Darby families, we are grateful for the opportunity to help deserving nursing students.”
